Birds of the Bible - For His Pleasure (by Lee Dusing)

Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. (Revelation 4:11)
The Lord has created some fantastically beautiful birds amongst His Creation. This blog is just to show you some of those birds. As you watch the photos, realize that they are under a curse, ("For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now." Romans 8:22) and yet they are so neat. What must the first birds have been like when they were created? The Lord must have the neatest Paint Brush!

These photos were chosen to show colors and markings. In another blog, I'll feature another of God's Creative Handiwork.

All of these photos are copyrighted © by the photographers and used with their permission. Please honor their copyrights.

Tim and Pam Darling - Update May 09

Date: Tuesday, May 26, 2009
Dear Praying Friends,

I guess it is about time for another update on what is going on in Venezuela and in our lives. I will start with our lives.

We are currently in North Carolina until the May 28th when we will head down to Florida to be with Pam's mother for two weeks. While here in NC we were able to attend Sarah´s graduation and Daniel and Karrah's Commissioning Service. Caleb and Sarah head for Japan on the July 2nd for six weeks and return for Caleb to finish up one more semester of college before he graduates. Pray for their trip and ministry opportunities while they are in Japan. Daniel and Karrah will head for Costa Rica on June 11th to start two months of intensive language study and then, Lord willing, fly to Venezuela around the August 15th. They still lack 8% of their support to be cleared by the Mission to go to Venezuela. Also pray for Karrah as she is 3 months pregnant and the baby's due date is December 7. This will be while they are in Venezuela, so
that birth will be a very special joy!

Venezuela: Alberto wrote us by means of email and that was a pleasant surprise. Tim has been communicating with him through email encouraging him to grow in the faith, sharing Bible verses with him. Continue to pray for him that God will use him for His honor and glory in the ministry.

Remember the married couple (the lawyers) who were at the Valentine dinner? Miguel Yustiz has continued to disciple the man and he is now auditing an online Master's program through Piedmont Baptist College. This guy is really moving along in his Christian growth! Based upon how he is able to handle the courses will determine if he is permitted to continue the degree as a regular student. His name is Reinaldo Useche. His wife's name is Adriana. Pray for these two.

Camp season is coming up and there is a lot of preparation going on. Dan Brooks from the Christian Camp "The Wilds" will be going down to train specific men who feel led of God to dedicate their lives in the camping ministry. That will be the week of June 22nd. On the 27th, the second Youth Rally for this year, will be held and we hope to have at least 180 youth in attendance. Pray that God will use this day full of activities which includes, 12 hours of Bible preaching, Bible quizzing, work shops on evangelism and sports events to challenge the youth in their walk with the Lord.

We have one church that has responded to our call for workers for a project at the camp. A group of 6 men will be coming down July 28th to work at the camp for ten days. Also we have met a young couple, Todd and Natalie Bishop, who desire to serve the Lord and are seeking God's direction for their lives. They will be with us for three weeks to see what God is doing in our city and to work at the camp (he is carpenter). If anyone else would like to come during that time to work at the camp, I can get you in contact with the group coming down form Ohio if you would like to travel with them or you can come by yourself. Just let us know and we will help you get there. Of the $4000 needed for the camp construction we have $750. Please pray about how you can be a part of this project.

Upcoming events:

Three weeks of camp - August 10 - 29. A two week module on Pastoral Counseling with Sam Hornbrook - the first two weeks of September The beginning of the 2009 - 2010 school year at the Bible Institute (September 14)
The Steve Pettit Evangelistic Team coming to minister to the churches in Puerto Ordaz - November 25 - 29
1 Thessalonians 5:17: In everything give thanks...

Thank you all so much for your prayer support. God is faithful and we thank Him for what He is doing through His servants in Venezuela and in answer to your prayers.

With thankful hearts,

Tim and Pam Darling

(Update:)
I would also like to include and add Joseph and Meg and Alec Darling to the prayer list....Meg is still having problems from a car accident that she had in 2004 and Alec who was 2 in January will be having some surgery on his mouth in June....Thoughts and prayers for them would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Margaret Lawson (Meg's Mother)

Birds of the Bible - Bird Idols (by Lee Dusing)

(16) For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. (17) For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written. The just shall live by faith. (18) For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; (19) Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath showed it unto them. (20) For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: (21) Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. (22) Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, (23) And changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things. (24) Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: (25) Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshiped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen. (Romans 1:16-25)
I know that the above quotation is long, but it is needed to show the problem of making idols in the image of birds and other things. Here on this blog, we discuss the birds and how the Lord has created each of them, how His glory and honor is to be praised for His great intelligence (omniscience) and power (omnipotence), etc. What we don't do is worship these birds. Over the centuries, man has taken his eyes off of God, and put it on things, such as birds. Then, he has used wood and other materials to make idols of them. Next come the worship of that idol. "Idolatry is a term used by the monotheistic religions in reference to the worship of physical objects (idols) and, more generally, to most any religious practices which involves the worship of anything other than God. Forms of worship encompassed under the term idolatry include prostrating before an idol, offering prayers to idols, and offering librations or animal sacrifices to idols." (from Creation Wiki) Here are some of the ways that man has denied God this way:

Chinese Phoenix - FenyangFenghuang: "Fenghuang is said to be made up of the beak of a rooster, the face of a swallow, the forehead of a fowl, the neck of a snake, the breast of a goose, the back of a tortoise, the hindquarters of a stag and the tail of a fish. Today, however, it is often described as a composite of many birds including the head of a golden pheasant, the body of a mandarin duck, the tail of a peacock, the legs of a crane, the mouth of a parrot, and the wings of a swallow. Its body symbolizes the six celestial bodies. The head is the sky, the eyes are the sun, the back is the moon, the wings are the wind, the feet are the earth, and the tail are the planets."

Statue of a griffin - VeniceGriffin: "The Griffin (griffon or gryphon is a legendary creature with the body of a lion and the head and often wings of an eagle. As the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts and the eagle was the king of the birds, the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Griffins are normally known for guarding treasure. In antiquity it was a symbol of divine power and a guardian of the divine."

Phoenix: "The bird was also said to regenerate when hurt or wounded by a foe, thus being immortal and invincible — it is also said that it can heal a person with a tear from its eyes and make them temporarily immune to death. The phoenix is a symbol of fire and divinity." "Originally, the phoenix was identified by the Egyptians as a stork or heron-like bird called a "benu", known from the Book of the Dead and other Egyptian texts as one of the sacred symbols of worship at Heliopolis, closely associated with the rising sun and the Egyptian sun-god Ra."

These are just a few of the Bird Idols around the world. As stated earlier, we love doing articles about the fantastic birds God has created, but please, don't take your eyes off of the Creator. He created them for His pleasure and ours, not to be worshiped.
Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, (Exodus 20:3-5a)

Snyders (Camp Sparta) Missionary Update

Missionary: Aaron & Stephanie Synder
Camp Sparta

• Thankful for a new generation of volunteers who have helped give the camp a new look with new paint on the buildings, some new roofs, some updated windows, and a massive lake clean-up effort.
• Theme for summer camp 2009 is “Behind The Scenes”. They will be taking a look into the principles of how God doesn’t look on the outward appearance and motions, but He looks at the heart, behind the scenes of our life. This will challenge the campers to take a look at their heart-life, their motives and thoughts, things that are hidden to most of us.
• Pray for students on their way this summer, that God would soften their hearts and change their lives for His glory.
• Pray for the staff, Aaron & Stephanie Synder, Justin & Maria Evans, and the summer staff as they work with the students in the months ahead.
• Pray for the financial situation. God is providing their needs and paying the bills, but it is clear that they need more individuals who are willing to invest in eternity with them at Camp Sparta.
• Pray for growth this summer, that God would bless their efforts in promotion and that more students would be reached with the gospel.

Birds of the Bible - Osprey III (by Lee Dusing)

But these are they of which ye shall not eat: the eagle, and the ossifrage, and the osprey, (Deuteronomy 14:12 KJV)
"But these are the ones which you shall not eat: the eagle and the vulture and the buzzard, (Deuteronomy 14:12 NASB)
Osprey Family by Phillip Simmons
I decided to revisit the Osprey because they have been actively nesting in the area the last few months and also have some new photos to share. The photo to the right is neat in that both are working to feed the little ones. They usually mate for life. Normally the male does the fishing while the female guards the nest. The Ospreys were greatly endangered with DDT, but they are making a great recovery. For the first "Birds of the Bible - Osprey," CLICK HERE

While preparing (with e-Sword) the above verse, I again reminded that not all the translations use "osprey or ospray". Some use "vulture" (ESV, NASB, NKJV & others) and Darby uses "sea-eagle." This was investigated in "Birds of the Bible - Osprey II."

The research that is being done with the DNA of birds is changing the classification of several birds. The Osprey is being affected by these changes also. They were with the New World Vultures and now that is being rethought.

There are four subspecies of Osprey (Pandionidae):
Eastern Osprey Stamp-Australia
Australia and New Guinea have an Pandion cristatus - Eastern Osprey (non-migratory) They even have stamps with their photos. The smallest subspecies.

North America - halietus carolinensis (migratory)

Eurasia - P.h. haliaetus

P.h. ridgwayi in the Caribbean; "Caribbean subspecies Pandion haliaetus ridgwayi. Known for their very pale head and breast plumage."

"Poole (1994) points to an interesting fact: despite its long history, Osprey has not evolved into different species." I can believe that.
The typical lifespan is 20-25 years.

Missionary Update - Jim Spoto

From: Jim Spoto Jr.

Dear Prayer Partners,

We wanted to get out our update to you so that you can keep up with what the Lord is doing here in this ministry that He has called us to!
Our bible studies and bible institute continue to move forward and we are seeing some growth in ministry areas and taking on some responsibilities. Lori and our co-workers have been training and preparing some of the ladies to help in the Sunday school classes. Please continue to pray for our folks as they continue to walk with the Lord and share the message of the gospel to those around them.

Our attendance continues to grow and we have had some visitors visiting recently. We are now averaging over 70 each service and for that we praise the Lord. Paolo Saluto our Italian young man is doing a very good job in leading the worship each Sunday with the help of Lori and our co-worker Beth.

We have been taking up a collection for the evangelical church that was destroyed in the earthquake at the beginning of the month just before Easter. We just today sent out over $650 as a church to them to help out with their needs. We are also putting together some boxes to be shipped which will help out with some of their physical needs. The church building was completely destroyed and they are meeting in tents and other places where they can gather.

We understand in just talking today with the camp nearby the earthquake area called Gran Sasso, that there are those that have gotten saved in the midst of this tragedy and are now true believers in Christ!! Some of the churches nearby the area have gone down with puppets and other ministries to share the gospel message and also to be a help and sharing the love of Christ. We wish that we were nearer to be able to be there to help out. We surely can continue to pray for our brothers and sisters there that have suffered so much loss.

We just this passed week hosted a Jewish brother who is a concert pianist by the name of Sam Rotman. He has done more than 2,000 concerts and has traveled in more than 57 countries. We have been planning for his arrival for over 2 years. He finally arrived to us this past Tuesday and we held two concerts both on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. In total we had around 150 folks out for the two evenings. Sam has a wonderful testimony of God's grace in his life and how the saved him out of Judaism. Just before the last song that he plays he takes the time to share his salvation testimony.

So we are praying for what was accomplished in those two evenings. He serves the Lord with his music and does this without asking for a dime when he comes. We rented a baby grand from a music store nearby and it was truly a blessing having that for him to play on. Attached are some pictures of the event.

Pray for our soon departure to the states for a short summer furlough. We are leaving here May 5th and will be visiting our churches and personal supporters up north. We are excited about seeing you and sharing first hand all that the Lord has been doing in these years. Pray for journey mercies as we travel by car from Florida to Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and then in the Carolinas.

Thank you again for your part here and again as we continually say, we could not do this ministry without you behind us and undergirding us. Lord bless you as you share the good news of our Savior to this lost world!

Until next time...

In Christ,
Jim, Lori and Jonathan
